AODA reporting for nonprofits & charities in Ontario.

The direct answer: yes — Ontario non-profit organizations and charities with 20 or more employees must file an accessibility compliance report by December 31, 2026. Same rule as businesses, same deadline, same portal. Being a charity doesn't exempt you; only headcount does.

The nonprofit-specific wrinkles

Volunteers don't count

Volunteers — including volunteer board members — are excluded from the employee count. Only paid staff in Ontario count toward the 20-employee threshold. A charity with 12 staff and 60 volunteers doesn't file.

But part-timers do

Many nonprofits run lean on full-time staff but heavy on part-time program workers. Part-time, seasonal, and contract staff all count. A "small" charity with 8 full-timers and 14 part-timers is at 22 — over the line.

Who certifies for a nonprofit?

The same rule: a director, senior officer, or authorized person — for a charity, that's typically the executive director or a board officer with authority to bind the organization. We'll tell you exactly who qualifies in your structure.

Why nonprofits get caught out

In our experience, the pattern is always the same: nobody owns the file. There's no compliance department — there's an office manager or program coordinator doing three jobs, and the AODA report lands on their desk in November. The 20–49 report is the shorter customer-service version, which is genuinely manageable — it just needs someone to sit down and do it. That's the entire service: we do the sitting down.
